Biography

Dutch pianist Florian Verweij (1997) is praised for his open-hearted and poetic performances, supported by a virtuoso technique and vibrant spontaneity. His debut album Sonorités de Paris (2024, Gutman Records) received national and international critical acclaim. ‘A worthwhile release from a pianist of real character and imagination,’ wrote International Piano about the album featuring works by Franck, Fauré, Boulanger, and Roger-Ducasse. Spanish classical music magazin Rítmo praised his "sound overflowing with imagination," and Trouw (NL) called the album "a wonderful plea for Roger-Ducasse's piano music.

In 2023, Florian made his debut at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw to a sold-out Recital Hall. That same year, he recorded the album Tales with violinist Emma Roijackers as part of the talent development program VIRTUOOS by Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS. Florian regularly performs chamber music with members of Camerata RCO. As a soloist, he appeared in various piano concertos, including performances with Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy.

Florian completed both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees with the highest distinction at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam, where he studied with Jan Wijn and Naum Grubert. Currently, he studies with the Georgian master pianist Eliso Virsaladze.

Noticed at a young age, Florian won prizes at the Princess Christina Competition (NL), the Young Pianist Foundation Competition (NL) and the Steinway Piano Competition (NL). He won the first prize at the International Magnus Piano Competition (Latvia, 2021) and was a finalist at the Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists (Germany, 2018). In recent years he has been invited to perform in Spain, Lithuania, Greece, Georgia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the USA.

Inspired by his performances for children in the mobile concert hall Classic Express of the Princess Christina Competition in the Netherlands, Florian has developed a strong commitment to music education and the nurturing of young talent in the broadest sense. For several years, he has been actively involved in the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s school and children’s concerts. In 2025, he led a workshop and masterclass for participants in the Royal Concertgebouw Competition and served on the jury of the Bunschoten Young Talent Prize at the Amsterdam Grachtenfestival. Through these activities, Florian seeks to pass on the opportunities for artistic growth that he himself received as a young pianist, encouraging and inspiring the next generation to engage with music.
